On February 5th, hundreds of community members from around the state will head to Olympia for a day of meetings with our legislators to discuss issues of concern to the A&NH/PI community, including immigration justice, civil and human rights, voting rights, environmental justice, education, access to healthcare, community development, and more! At this debrief session, they had many experts speak on the 2025 federal budget reconciliation bill, H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. APIC Democracy Summit APIC's Democracy Summit happened on Friday, September 27th, 2024 at the Tacoma Dome. Every four years, the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of Washington holds a Democracy Summit with the goal of encouraging and promoting culturally meaningful and holistic civic engagement in our communities, and creating a space for our communities to collectivize around the issues that matter most to us. The summit is an opportunity for our culturally, linguistically, and geographically diverse AANHPI communities to come together and make sure our elected officials or candidates see, hear, and understand our collective power. Asians comprise 12% (888,309) of Washington's population and 9% (474,053) of the citizen voting age population in Washington. Counties with the largest Asian AIC eligible voting populations: King County (254,657), Snohomish County (62,449), Pierce County (56,138), Clark County (20,594), Thurston County (14,875). Kaiser Family Foundation estimates Washington will lose at least $3 billion per year in federal Medicaid dollars each year for the next 10 years. 250,000 Washingtonians will lose Medicaid coverage & to be priced out of the state’s health care exchange. The bill has several provisions directly targeting refugees and other humanitarian entrants, with most groups cut off from Medicaid, Medicare, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Affordable Care Act access starting next year. All Washingtonians on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will see benefits reduced. 1 million Washingtonians who receive assistance from SNAP will see their benefits reduced under the bill and more than 130,000 Washingtonians could lose benefits. 3. Clean energy investments at risk. The bill passed out of Congress puts at least $8.7 billion in Washington’s clean energy investments at risk. The U.S. Climate Alliance estimates the bill’s removal of wind and solar energy tax credits will raise Washington households’ electricity costs by $115 per year by 2029. The Asian Pacific Islander Coalition (APIC) was created after the 1996 Welfare Reform Act significantly impacted and reduced non-citizens’ federal eligibility for public assistance programs. After recognizing the need for a collective voice advocating for the rights and equity of foreign-born Asian and Pacific Islanders (API), APIC began lobbying for the Washington State legislature to address the gap created by federal legislation. Building off this legacy, every year APIC Chapters from King, Pierce, Snohomish, Yakima, and Spokane counties and South Puget Sound bring together immigrants, refugees, and citizens from Washington state to meet with the Governor, State Representatives, and State Senators to advocate for the issues most impactful to our communities Our Values Honoring our history We must preserve and learn from the past. We had food vendors, performances, and activities for the entire family. The mission of this event was to highlight Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander American communities, cultures, traditions, and experiences. The Limited English Proficient (LEP) Pathways’ primary goal is to promote economic self-sufficiency for refugees and immigrants through job training, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, work support, and social services. By maintaining funding for the LEP Pathways program at $1,774,000, we can better support low-income and limited English speaking immigrants. These program funding sources were cut during the 2008 financial crisis, causing immigrant communities to suffer disproportionately during that time of economic downturn.
