Medicaid has provided vital health care to over 80 million Americans, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and many within our AANHPI communities. In Washington State alone, nearly 2 million people rely on Apple Health (the state's Medicaid program). On July 4th, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was signed, cutting almost $1 trillion from Medicaid. The Bill also curtails provider taxes, meaning states have to make a difficult choice: make cuts to other services (such as education) or raise taxes, or make even deeper cuts to Medicaid. Governor Ferguson's office estimates at least 250,000 Washingtonians will lose Medicaid Coverage . Read the Health Care Authority report below for more information. Kaiser Family Foundation estimates Washington will lose at least $3 billion per year in federal Medicaid dollars each year for the next 10 years. 250,000 Washingtonians will lose Medicaid coverage & to be priced out of the state’s health care exchange. The bill has several provisions directly targeting refugees and other humanitarian entrants, with most groups cut off from Medicaid, Medicare, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Affordable Care Act access starting next year. Read more here. The graphic on the right showcases these statistics and how they will impact children in WA State. 2. All Washingtonians on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will see benefits reduced. 1 million Washingtonians who receive assistance from SNAP will see their benefits reduced under the bill and more than 130,000 Washingtonians could lose benefits. 3. Clean energy investments at risk. The bill passed out of Congress puts at least $8.7 billion in Washington’s clean energy investments at risk. The U.S. Climate Alliance estimates the bill’s removal of wind and solar energy tax credits will raise Washington households’ electricity costs by $115 per year by 2029. We request that the legislature support A&NH/PI and other immigrant communities by maintaining funding levels for naturalization services, Limited English Proficient pathways, and legal aid for low income immigrants. Heilsujafnrétti fyrir innflytjendur The legislature committed to adding 5,000 spaces under the Apple Health Expansion Currently, the Apple Health Expansion is providing health coverage to roughly 10,000 Washingtonians who would otherwise be eligible for Medicaid, but are excluded due to their immigration status. The legislature should preserve funding for the AHE and ensure that all available funds are used to enroll applicants as more than 20,000 are currently waitlisted for coverage. The legislature should also work with the Health Care Authority to ensure that only strictly required data is reported to the federal government to maximize privacy for Washingtonians accessing these services. Heilsujafnrétti fyrir innflytjendur Secured funding Tsuru for Solidarity is requesting $150,000 to place a new statue of Sadako at the original site within the Seattle Peace Park. In July 2024, the statue of Sadako Sasaki (a 12-year old Japanese victim of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima) was cut off at the ankles and stolen from the Seattle Peace Park adjacent to the University Bridge. A community coalition of organizations and individuals from the Japanese American community, peace community, faith community and many other individuals locally, nationally and internationally came together to hold a healing ceremony at the site and to express a strong sentiment to renew the spirit of peace, harmony, and world community. The City of Seattle has already budgeted $400,000 for the project, and the coalition is currently seeking the remaining $150,000 from the State Legislature to cover the costs of design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of the new statue and renewed park. Heilsujafnrétti fyrir innflytjendur Khmer Community of Seattle King County (KCSKC) is seeking $6 million to build the first Khmer Community and Cultural Center in Seattle and Washington State at large. The center aims to be a cultural hub—empowering youth, providing elder services, and enhancing economic opportunities. It will foster community belonging and move Khmer communities closer to healing and liberation through cultural events, workshops, and educational programs. Heilsujafnrétti fyrir innflytjendur Indian American Community Services (IACS) is requesting $2 million to fill the remaining gap in funding for their community center. They will begin renovation of Phase I of the Community Center project in Kent, WA. In 2022, IACS purchased a 22,000 sq building, of which 12,000 sq ft is leased to a restaurant. The remaining 10,000 sq ft will be renovated into an inclusive, multigenerational community center serving people of all ages and backgrounds, with a focus on cultural connection, education, and essential support services. The project will be developed in two phases. Solidarity Agenda Löggjafarþingi 2022 er lokið! Markmið okkar Our Mission Asian Pacific Islanders Coalition South Puget Sound (APIC SPS) er óflokksbundið bandalag sem stuðlar að jöfnum aðgangi að menningarlega hæfum og tungumálaaðgengilegri heilbrigðis- og mannþjónustu, efnahagsþróun fyrir lítil fyrirtæki, borgara- og mannréttindum, jöfnum aðgangi að menntun og öðrum áhyggjum API. . Við hvetjum til og eflum borgaralega þátttöku Asíu-Ameríku-Kyrrahafseyjabúa (AAPI) í kosninga- og opinberri stefnumótun. Our History The Asian Pacific Islander Coalition (APIC) of Washington was created after the 1996 Welfare Reform Act significantly impacted and reduced non-citizens’ federal eligibility for public assistance programs. After recognizing the need for a collective voice advocating for the rights and equity of foreign-born Asian and Pacific Islanders (API), APIC began lobbying for the Washington State legislature to address the gap created by federal legislation. Building off this legacy, every year APIC Chapters from King, Pierce, Snohomish, Yakima, and Spokane counties and South Puget Sound bring together immigrants, refugees, and citizens from Washington state to meet with the Governor, State Representatives, and State Senators to advocate for the issues most impactful to our communities. Recognizing the need for a collective voice advocating for the rights and equity of foreign-born Asian and Pacific Islanders, APIC formed to voice our opinions the Washington State legislature to address the gap created by federal and state legislation APIC championed the passage of legislation that created a state supported safety net. This included: State-funded food stamps program State-funded naturalization program Ensured access to basic income support programs and emergency & Covid medical programs for immigrants and refugees Creation of a limited english proficient employment pathway program Asian Pacific Islanders Coalition of South Puget Sound is a part of APIC of Washington's network with its own nonprofit status. It was co-founded in 2003. Our Vision and Values Our vision is to create a welcoming and inclusive community for AA-NH/PI individuals and organizations in the South Puget Sound area of Washington State. Honoring our history We must preserve and learn from the past. We celebrate our unique stories, successes and struggles, pain, and disappointments. Valuing the intergenerational wisdom our community has means cultivating meaningful connections between generations. We center youth voices and leadership as we continue to grow. Commitment to Equity and Justice Centering the voices and lived experiences of oppressed communities comes first. We must acknowledge the intersections of privilege and oppression. We are committed to fighting against white supremacy through an anti-racist lens. Modeling Integrity We move at the speed of trust and consensus. Transparency is a top priority. Nourishing Community It is vital to create spaces for learning, reflection, and expression through mediums such as cultural/spiritual arts and literary mediums. We build and lift each other up with love, compassion, and empathy. Leading with Courage and Passion We embrace differences and lean into discomfort. We celebrate success and acknowledge the wisdom of failure. Building Power and Solidarity Our ancestors are always with us. We recognize the interconnectedness of our oppression and the work of those who came before us. We ground our work in the struggles of Indigenous communities.
